itchy wound advice
« on: July 12, 2015, 08:34:20 PM »
My most recent SH I had stitched is so so itchy it's getting on my nerves
I can't scratch at it as it may damage it or affect the stitches or reopen it etc
I can't put cream or anything on it
but I feel like I need to itch it which is annoying me

any advice?

Completely agree with rob - only thing I've ever found helpful for itching sh is cold packs - they've definitely saved my sanity so many times!!!

I've been advised in the past, that when the wound/stitches become itchy it means the stitches are ready to be removed.

Please seek professional advice, whether the stitches should be removed or not

Thank you both! :)

it has stopped itching now but the cold pad did help for the first couple of days

The stitches are due to come out Friday which will be 7 days so I think it should be ok until then as it has stopped itching now.

If there is a similar situation in future it is ok to use some types of cream. If you put sudocreme / bepanthen/ savlon / certain itch relief creams in the fridge then apply them when it is really itchy then they can be helpful without causing a problem.  It's also possible to use vaseline.   Once the stitches are out there will probably be more itching again any of the above can be used.

It is also possible to get lanacane over the counter which is designed for hemorrhoids but stops things from itching. It contains a very mild anaesthetic (does not numb skin) so tends to last longer, but it also stinks and sticks around for a long time.

But obviously if there are ever any steri-strips in the same are no creams are advisable
