Is DBT only for people with BPD? *poss trig SI/SH*
« on: April 12, 2015, 09:51:38 AM »
 :trig:

Hi,

I'm a self harmer but I don't think I have BPD (however I've never been to the doctors to get diagnosed for any kind of mental illness or disorder - I've only ever been for stress). I keep hearing about DBT and I think it might be a useful therapy to combat SH. However I often hear about it in association with BPD. Is it only for people with BPD?

Also, can anyone who has done DBT tell me what it's like?

Big thanks x

DBT was designed for people with BPD as its like enhanced CBT

I think you may have to be in secondary services (referred by GP to CMHT)

Going by your other post I'm guessing that you've not long been seeing a GP for your sh.

Its great you're wanting to help yourself but too much too soon can have a detrimental effect

Thank you Hayley,

Yes, I've not been seeing my GP for long (yesterday was the first time!)... I'll try to take things slow.

Slow is good.

DBT isn't necessarily just for people with BPD, though in some areas it kind of it. It was suggested that I do a DBT course because of the self-harm, but I couldn't access it through the CMHT because I don't have a diagnosis of BPD/EUPD. I think it varies based on postcode though.

Well done for seeing your GP. That's a really positive step. :hug2:

And hope and grace were all I needed.

Thank you :)

I am having my initial assessment for counselling on Monday. My GP recommended the place. I'm hoping it will help me get out of whatever hole I got myself into recently x
