People do often describe sh as addictive.
Can I ask why it is important for you to know?

Does your friend have any professional help? If not, what about printing off some of the advice leaflets from the home page of the main website for them to look at. Or do you have a school counsellor / pastoral assistant that you could have a chat with or point your friend in the direction of.
Like I said up there, lots of people do describe it as addictive - though I don't know whether it is the act or the feelings that are addictive.
Your friend is lucky to have you caring about them. xx

Hi, I know its horrible seeing someone you care about go through something like this, Im sure that alot of people who sh say that while at the time its a release or makes them happy even just for a second they would rather do without it.
Just to answer your original question, from my point of view, I think it is possible to get addicted. Sometimes just the feeling of sh can be something that people will do over and over. i admit that in the past (and sometimes even now bt less frequent) I have felt like I have "needed" it but I think in a way I was also addicted to the routine and the power over my tools and things if that makes sense. xx

Hi Kjw, Just saw this post which I know is a little old. I don't see Sh as addictive as such, it is a coping mechanism relating to your negative feelings and circumstances so if they are constantly making you feel bad about yourself the need to Sh will be stronger to gain some type of temporary feeling of release or self punishment and this can be a vicious cycle. I have seen Em on her bad days / months when pressures were building up on her either from so called friends or school and Sh was a constant part of her life. These days she is in a much better situation and seems to feel almost no urge to Sh at all.
